About my Job
I practise a number of therapies (acupuncture, aromatherapy, Scenar therapy) in different clinics across South London. I also do home visits and have worked in community groups ( Age Concern and an NHS mental health project). I see a wide range of people and conditions. My oldest acupuncture patient so far is 84 years old. My particular interests are gynaecology, infertility, pregnancy care and pain (from disease, degenerative conditions and sports or occupational injuries). I like to work with other therapists, to offer a holistic approach to a treatment and sometimes mix my modalities, for example, offering both acupuncture and Scenar therapy in the same session. It's about what's effective, not the therapy.
Why I became a Therapist
For many years I worked as a researcher in the public sector; looking at issues such as access to housing for the disabled, gender discrimination in the workplace and so on. After a while I wanted more than being sat behind a desk. I'd also had my first introductory massage weekend course which was truly amazing and set me on the road to complementary health. This was made more pressing by chronic injuries I sustained and so combining work and studying for my acupuncture degree, allowed me finally to step into the world of complementary health. A tough journey over 10 years but worth it to be able to do a job I find immensely fulfilling.
My Motivation
Being a therapist for me is about helping people in whatever guise that is, such as, taking away pain, improving a person's quality of life, or enhancing sports or occupational performance. This is what motivates me. I also enjoy being autonomous and constantly being challenged by my work to improve and understand more.
My Training
I trained in massage and aromatherapy originally, gaining diplomas in both these. Then I studied a three-year degree in acupuncture at the University of Westminster. I've subsequently studied on specialist courses in cosmetic acupuncture, ear and scalp and obstetric acupuncture and more recently the revolutionary technology of Scenar therapy (developed originally for Russian cosmonauts to treat themselves in space).
About My Service
I offer a professional, yet friendly approach to improving a person's health and can use a variety of specialisms and knowledge to give effective holistic treatments. I've often treated those scared of needles and can offer a gentle treatment when needed. I try to be flexible and understanding and like being asked lots of questions!
My Projects
I offer therapeutic magnetic products for sale from my website and hope to develop this further. My favourite is the magnessage which can be used for a wide variety of aches and pains.
My Favourite Websites
Many useful health-related sites I've listed on my website www.essentialtherapia.com.
The site I've personally used the most is PubMed, which is a service of the US National Library of Medicine that includes millions of citations from various journals. It enables me to keep up to date with the latest research on my therapies: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/
When not working I like to browse this website's lovely hotels and B&Bs and think of journeys yet to come: www.i-escape.com
